Disability Mentoring Day will be October 25, 2011 from 9-3 pm at the Downtown Library Conference Area. We are expecting over 300 individuals to participate throughout the day. LeaVonda Battle, a strategic communications management consultant to help build stronger communities, will be providing training to help people living with disabilities compete in the job market.
The ILRC has been partnering with LeaVonda Battle and BattleGroup Communications for more than two years. Recently the ILRC has purchased copies of the BattleGroup Communications curriculum for youth.
The ILRC currently provides services to youth ages 14 to 22 who have various disabilities through a program known as High School/High Tech. The ILRC has been providing this program to over 300 youth in Duval County on an annual basis. Services are provided to these students through monthly workshops based on skills the students will need to become independent adults.

This week, BattleGroup Communication and other local businesses went to Tallahassee to speak with representatives about educational and community development issues. The biggest challenge is trying to improve and maintain the level of care with budgets shrinking.

Our educational talking points were as follows:

• Do not mandate or assign any new, expanded or modified programs or responsibilities unless fully funded by state.

• Identify ad dedicate a stable, reliable and recurring source if state revenue for PK-12 education to a)replace federal stimulus monies, b) re-store prior year cuts, c) avoid additional cuts to educational funding.

• Fulfill the constitutional requirement to make adequate provision for "A uniform, efficient, safe, secure and high quality system of free public education".

• Engage and involve all the stakeholders in any substantial legislative iniatives effecting public education.

It is imperative to have innovative thinkers and strategic alliances to augment the current financial climate. BattleGroup Communication will be partnering with Northeast Florida Family Support Services to support the independent living program for youth aging out of foster care. "We are excited about this partnership," stated LeaVonda Battle. "This has been a passion of mine to support the youths who have had a greater challenge growing up and are now faced with adulthood. Many of the youths have missed many of the foundational skills to help them lives successful adult lives. Through this partnership, we are going to provide the tools needed."

The Importance of Strong Families

    There are many adults who have been released into society without a strong family foundation. Familes are training grounds to teach people how to interact with society. In families, people learn loyalty, safety, love and acceptance. However, what if the person is released into society and they have never expereienced those foundational principles.
     Furthermore, what if you are the person leading this person in work or serving in the community with this person. An effective, strong leader develops his or her team members so they may mine the jewels that are inside of them (talents, skills or wisdom for the team). Maybe, the leader feels that is a personal problem and not my issue. Feel fortunate or proud that you were covered in your relationship. Now for the sake of the team and the community, you must be a person who can see the needs of others. Furthermore, you may loose a talented person because you lack the ability to interact with people from various backgrounds. We are not talking negating a high performace team.  Nor are we saying that a person who refuses to submitt to process or change should continue to work on a team, if they are causing the team their effectiveness.
     There are many workshops for leaders who would like to improve their teams. The seminars and workshops also help the families of the leaders because many times while the leaders are trying to move to the top of the organization, the leaders may be having challenges relating to their families.
